Genre Research: Romance

The first genre we began researching was romance. A romance film is a visual media that broadcasts the romantic relationship and love story of typically two people. In these films it focuses on passion, emotion, and the journey of love. Some common camera angles and movements you can find in these films are extreme long shots, medium shots, close-ups, extreme close-ups, long shots, medium long shots, medium close-ups, and tracking shots.  These camera positions allow for a particular position to be focused on so that the dynamic of a scene can be exhibited. Jump cuts are common editing cuts we can see in these films. Types of sound we can see in this genre are diegetic, non diegetic, voice overs, and sound bridges. These sound types can create the mood of a scene depending on how a director utilizes them. Common sound we can hear is soft and calm music that represents sensitivity and connection in a film. The use of sound assists to awaken the emotion of an audience. Lightning can consist of very vibrant and dim lights to induce a romance set up. With mis - en- scene common romantic props are gifts like flowers, jewelry, chocolate, et cetera. Gift giving is very essential in these films because it shows the connection between the characters. Costumes are very diverse but you can usually find formal attire for dates and special occasions being worn. Most romance films can take place in cities like New York. This is very common because cities contain all the elements a person would need to produce a romance movie. In stereotypical romance movies there are always two love interests. Some popular romance films are the Notebook, Titanic, To All the Boys I've Loved Before, and Everything Everything. In our film we do not want to incorporate any romantic props since we are going for a more scary film idea. However, we would want to close ups so we can capture all of the scary elements.

Our Pitch

My partners and I began my constructed two pitches today. The first pitch was about Clara Denzel that doesn't really fit in at her new school. Later, she finds that her life turns around when she joins a band. The second pitch is about a girl that moves into a new town with her mom, but the town isn't what it seems. When strange occurrences, weird visions occur, she soon discovers the secret to the town. The very first idea we considered making into a pitch was about Clara Denzel. But there were a few things that we didn't like about the pitch. The first being that we would need to record at a school for the setting of the movie, which we were only not allowed to do for this task. Second, we wanted to make the opening scene of the main character playing the guitar, but we don't have access to a guitar. Third, we would need a lot more actors to make a school setting come to life and actually look realistic, which isn’t attainable. And finally, we wanted to get the rights to use a song from the band Sleeping With Sirens, but we couldn’t be certain we could get the song in time. Overall, this pitch had a lot of obstacles that we would have had to work around to get the movie done. When we came up with the other pitch, we had a spooky, creepy theme in mind. There were many things we liked about this idea. For example, we wanted to film in a forest and there happens to be a forest next to my house. Also, we wanted the film to feature a mom and a daughter, which will work out perfectly with me joining our group. When my partners and I were discussing the idea, we brainstormed many camera angles and shots that we could include. When we came up with the ideas, it made us super excited. All of us could see the vision and could see ourselves filming this pitch in the future. Our final decision was to go with the second pitch!

A New Group!

For my final task I will be working with a new group. My previous group with Riana and Janiya was not progressing how I would like. Certain people were not taking the project seriously and I knew for my own good that I needed to switch groups. I knew if I wanted to excel in the next stage, that changes needed to be made immediately. So I asked my friend Adriana if I could join her group with Adrian. She was very excited to accept me as she only had two people, including her, in the group. I made sure to inform my former group about me leaving because I did not want to be disrespectful towards them. They were both every understanding and cooperative about the situation.  We all enjoyed working and growing with each other but we knew there was an issue. They also decided to switch groups as well. I was not interested in working alone because I did not want to take on so much and I know working in a group is way better than working alone. I have known Adrian for about few months and he seems like a chill guy. I am not that close with him but I am open to forming a friendship. I have known Adriana since preschool and she is a very nice person. I know she is very serious about her school work. She is the type of person to hold you accountable for your work and she is always on top of hers. I know I need an individual like this because I procrastinate a lot and I believe Adriana will be a good influence on me. I am very excited to start fresh with a new group. We have started to draft many ideas together and I know it is going to be difficult to choose one. We all have many diverse personalities so I know what we produce is going to be very creative. I can not wait to began!

Introduction

My name is Faith Folkes and I am a junior at Fort Lauderdale High School. I am currently 16 years old and taking Media Studies AS to broaden my understanding of media in the world. During my free time I enjoy making videos of every experience I encounter. Whether it be watching a beautiful sunset or stressing over an essay, I love to capture the moment so that I can reflect on it later on. I am also interested in becoming a YouTuber, meaning that I would post content for viewers to see. All the elements I learn within this course can contribute to many interests that I have. Over the past few months I have worked on multiple projects that have built my media skills and I am very excited to incorporate it into our final task. Now when I am ready to film anything, I naturally integrate the elements I have gained from this class. Before this course I would always record content either up and down or side to side. Now I know that there is specific terminology for those movements called tilt and pan. With this knowledge I am able to share it with others such as friends, family, and co workers. Little improvements like that are what encourage me to endure the next obstacle that I will face. It boosts my confidence in myself and makes me want to work on the project even more. I am also ready to include my constructive criticism that I received on my recent projects. I struggled on procrastinating on tasks so I am willing to work on that and improve greatly. Being presented with this final task allows me to gather every last element that I have learned and make it even better. From filming on my phone to editing on the Movie platform, I feel as if I have grown into a professional film creator. I am ready to teach myself and learn more from this final task. Embarking on this journey will be a once in a lifetime experience. LET'S GO!

Our Music Video!

This was such a fun project for my group. It was a big step up form the commercial but I knew we would handle it. While we started off with a totally different song and idea, but knew it had to be changed. When we thought of a Christmas song it was perfect. There were Christmas decorations all over town so filming was a breeze. There were many bumps along the way but it pulled together very well. There were no issues with my group and we all pulled our weight together so well. I had so much fun filming clips and editing the final project with them. Overall I am just very happy we completed it on time and I was able to work on it with them.

Editing Our Music Video

Today I captured me accessorizing a Christmas tree with the supplies I purchased at Bed Bath & Beyond. When I arrived home I organized all ornaments that I bought and lit a Christmas candle. I shot the flames blazing from the candle at a tilt angle. Then I placed string lights onto the tree and filmed myself twisting the light cords together. I then fluffed the tree to make it look more full and started grabbing the ornaments from there boxes. I recorded myself grabbing them from there boxes so that my audience could view the patterns along the ball. Afterwards, I shot the ball at a close up to encapsulate even more of the amazing details on the ornament. Next, I filmed myself placing the ornaments onto the tree with the string lights on. Later, I wrapped the garland around my stairwell and began placing the stocking on it. I videoed the process of putting the stocking on and the result of it. For the final recording I placed the camera into the tree and dragged it out to create a zoomed out movement. With this I was able to show the final product of the finished Christmas tree. Since all of these scenes were during the day I then shot at night. Filming at night allowed for the glamorous beauties of the tree to be revealed. I was able to capture the lights and ornaments glistening because of this. This whole process was difficult because I did not have a lot assistance. As a result of this, I had to film with one hand on the camera while was the other was performing an action.  Although working alone on this portion of filming, coming together and combining the scenes will be very simple. The next step is to begin collaborating the clips. I am excited to utilize the skills I learned from the commercial and integrate them into the music video.
